Fresh at Ellwoods: Local Produce Profiles!
Want to know what makes Ellwood's local produce good? Then you're sure to want to know what makes our local selection better and best, too!
In an effort to help you make the most informed local produce selections, Ellwoods introduces Good, Better and Best. With this simple rating system you can, at a glance, know how your local food is grown.
Cyndi Watkins, Ellwood's local product forager, is in charge of keeping it local at Ellwoods. She is working with Jason, Ellwood's garden (aka produce) manager and all of our local farmers to create "Truth in Growing" statements. With this information, Jason and his team will make sure all produce provided by local farms is tagged with the appropriate Good, Better, Best designation.
Ellwoods also offers incentives for the farms that fall within the Better and Best categories so that our customers will have access to fresh, delicious local goods grown with the best organic practices.

Eggstra, eggstra, read all about it: We've got eggs!
Local hens are laying lots of eggs! We have a wonderful variety of
fresh-from-the-farm eggs at Ellwoods. Many of our eggs come from the
Mennonite farmers in the Shenandoah Valley who also supply us with pastured
chickens and turkeys and lots of organically grown produce.

Eat Local
You may know by now that we've gone local at Ellwood's. In fact, we changed our name recently from Ellwood Thompson's Natural Market to Ellwood Thompson's Local Market. Why?
We're still committed to bringing you the best natural and organic products, but we're also dedicated to offering the best local fare, too. We think it's important to know the source of our food. As large corporate food producers seek competitively priced ingredients, often times sourced globally, we all need to know our food is safe. (Learn more about the globalization of food.)
And local food is fresher so it tastes better and maintains more nutrients. It's not trucked or flown in from other parts of the country, so resources are conserved in the process.
Consider local food super health food, not only for your health, but for the health of local farms, our local economy and our environment.

What exactly is local?
Location, Location, Location
At Ellwoods, we define local as 100 miles or less from our store. That's less than two hours drive from the store, depending on how windy that first road is from the farm. We'd like to introduce you to some of our farmers. They are wonderful folks who live very close to your home. Meet the farmers. »
