Charitable Giving and Donations at Ellwood's

CommunityPart of Ellwood Thompson's mission statement is to actively support our local community. We do this in many ways, such as supplying food to the Virginia Food Bank, providing edible gifts-in-kind for charitable events/fundraisers, feeding volunteers at various events and offering gifts to be auctioned.

One of our biggest charitable events is 5% Days. Read more about 5% Days.

Studio Time CD Release Party
We're proud to participate in the CD release party for Studio Time on Friday, June 27 from 5:30-7 PM at the Neighborhood Resource Center, 1519 Williamsburg Road.

Enjoy light refreshments and a copy of Style Weekly's latest Richmond music disc compilation when you buy a Studio Time CD.

Join Ellwood Thompson's as we celebrate the release of the teen's first homespun CD produced in the Necd cover artighborhood Resource Center's own recording studio. The kids' stories cover a range of human experience, from fantasy to tragic reality. Jamilla writes about someone she knows who was shot; Kenya writes about the joy of eating the perfect burger; Zakia pronounces her dream of going to college, not being on the streets.

Many of the kids who want to use the studio are put off by the required writing, not because they don't have ideas, but because they are not confident about their writing skills. The NRC has a writing coach to work with kids at all levels of language ability. Before they step into the vocal booth to record, the kids write their stories and raps on paper and check the dictionary for spelling. It's a process that is gaining momentum, especially now that the kids have produced their own CD.

One thing is certain: The more opportunities kids have to tell their stories, the stronger their compositions and composure become. Some of the older kids are composing songs with beats and backup vocals ... others are learning to use the recording software.

Special thanks to Memorial Foundation for Children and the Richmond Police Department for supporting this project. For more info visit nrccafe.org.
